Why a small amount can change the estimate

Mixed sauces deserve a recipe entry when they recur. Log the tahini, oil, lemon juice and other ingredients for the whole batch, record the finished yield, then assign the amount used. This keeps the flavor combination while avoiding repeated guesswork.

For covered U.S. chains, FDA menu-labeling rules require calorie information for standard menu items and additional written nutrition information on request. Use the restaurant’s current data when your order matches the standard item. If you customize the dish, add or remove the components the published entry no longer represents.

For an independent restaurant, ask for dressing on the side if that suits your preference, or estimate the portion used after the meal. Read a food photo for clues, then add the missing context

A photograph can prompt useful questions. Is there gloss on roasted vegetables? Does dressing pool at the bottom of the salad? Is the sandwich filling creamy? Is a dipping cup full, half-used or empty? These clues help you remember components; they do not measure the recipe.

Tell the log what the image cannot: the vegetables were tossed with oil before roasting, the curry used coconut milk, the coffee included sweetened creamer, or the dip was shared. When possible, include sauce cups and drinks in the frame so they remain part of the record. Photographing only the attractive center of the plate makes the later audit harder.

When the amount is uncertain, choose a reasonable middle estimate and keep the method consistent. A range may be more honest for a restaurant dish. The purpose is to reduce systematic omission, not to force certainty from limited evidence.

Use a six-second extras check

Before saving, ask six short questions: Was fat used to cook it? Was anything spread inside it? Was it dressed or coated? Was there a dip? Were there toppings? Was there a caloric drink? You will not answer yes every time, which is precisely why the checklist remains quick.

Focus first on patterns, not rare traces. If your morning coffee addition happens daily, verify and save it. If the same homemade dressing appears four times a week, create the recipe. If one celebratory tasting menu is impossible to reconstruct, make a reasonable entry and move on. Tracking should illuminate your routine, not demand forensic work after every meal.
